What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) gets its name from its focus on acceptance of what is outside of your personal control, and commitment to actions that improve your life.
ACT is rooted in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) and is at once mindfulness-based and experiential. ACT has been used successfully for the treatment of depression, OCD, workplace stress, chronic pain, the stress of terminal cancer, anxiety, PTSD, anorexia, substance abuse and chronic mental illness.
At its core, ACT aims to help us create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting that pain and hurt are a natural part of living. ACT encourages taking action towards what you values in an effort to live a meaningful and mindful life.
