Feel Calm, Connected, and Resilient with Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

A Simple Approach to Help You or Your Child Thrive

What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to reduce sound sensitivities and improve auditory processing, behavioral state regulation, and social engagement behaviors through filtered music.

As a practical application of the Polyvagal Theory, the SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to re-tune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience. The SSP involves listening to specially filtered music through headphones alongside a provider, in-person or remotely. Suitable for children and adults, the SSP has demonstrated benefits for individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences and more.

Safe and Sound Protocol FAQs

  • The Polyvagal Theory suggests that the activation of either the ventral vagal or dorsal vagal branch is dependent on how safe we believe our environment to be. When we feel safe, the ventral vagal branch is activated, promoting social engagement and feelings of connection. When we feel threatened, the dorsal vagal branch is activated, promoting feelings of disconnection and shutting down

The Safe and Sound Protocol uses a specialized listening program to activate the vagus nerve through the auditory pathways in order to promote a state of safety and connection.

  • By helping to access a calm and grounded state, the SSP promotes a neural platform for health, growth and restoration in patients experiencing the following challenges:

    • Anxiety

    • Inattention and Focus

    • Auditory sensitivities

    • Behavioral Regulation and Resilience

    • Physical Coordination and Balance

    • Reading and Auditory Processing

    • Sleep

    • Speech and Language

    • Social and emotional difficulties

    • Trauma and PTSD

    • Stressors that impact social engagement

    • And many more

  •  The Safe and Sound Protocol, or SSP, is a 5-hour listening program. However, I work closely with each client to tailor their listening program to best suit their needs.

  • The music playlists consist of 3 playlists: an adult playlist, a child playlist and a classical playlist. The child playlist consists primarily of Disney soundtracks. All of the SSP playlists employ tracks at frequencies that stimulate the middle ear muscles.

Because the music is processed through a special algorithm, the music might sound different than you would anticipate.
